In a perfect world, the City would light all streets. However, costs limit
where streetlights are installed and the type of street determines who pays for
it—the taxpayers or local property owners.
Arterial streets
The City lights all designated arterial streets because they carry traffic
(general public) between different parts of the City.
Non-arterial streets
Local property owners pay to install lights on non-arterial streets—those
streets not designated as arterials or alleys. Once the lights are installed,
the City pays for maintenance and energy costs.
Alleys
The City does not pay for alley lighting because alleys are used primarily by
adjacent property owners. Owners must pay installation and maintenance of alley
lighting.

reporting malfunctioning lights. Some common repairs to report include:
|

-
Light stays on during day.
-

-
Broken globes.
-
Damaged poles.
-
Dig-up of underground circuits.

Off-street
Lighting Program
|
|
Tacoma Power (formerly Tacoma City Light) offers
residents a program for installing lights on existing power poles in alleys.
Tacoma Power adds a monthly charge to your utility bill.
|
|
First, check your surroundings. Sometimes a light
that you can install in your backyard or on your garage can provide better
security than having the Public Utilities install one in your alley.
